The main purpose of this site is to share my experience in developing electronics projects
using various platforms and tools, while trying to adhere to the open source approach.
This means using open source or free software, make the hardware designs freely available and open to changes.
In open source, an important word for me is open. In my vision, this is not limited to free, but also means open minded. Too often, I hear people talking about the best tool, or processor, or platform... From my experience, this is irrelevant. What is the best for one project can be different for another one. What matters is that users are happy and comfortable with the products they use. And that depends of each individual, each project, the mood of the moment we choose...
This started as just a repository for my own use, where I could keep records of various things I did. I recently needed to expand some project, but without having the time to design from scratch. I needed a way to record data from various wireless sensors around the house, and looked a various options.
I found the OpenEnergyMonitor project, which offers the functionality I needed. The vision of the project also convinced me that open source project was the way forward.
The problem I had then: their design is based on Arduino like hardware, I used Microchip PIC processor for my boards. Thankfully, I use the same radio transceivers. So it is just a question of will, and time...
This was the perfect opportunity to make the jump. I ordered the web-connected base-station, a NanodeRF, and got things working in no time.
That's me sold on the open source approach. Just need to convert my previous work, and publish it properly... Just a question of will, and time...
